Washington — US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is 90 percent incapacitated after the US military operation. He said that Iran’s top military leadership is almost finished.
The claim came as the US announced that it would reimpose a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz and levy a toll on ships passing through it.
In an interview with Fox News, President Trump claimed that the joint US-Israeli military operation had severely damaged Iran’s defense infrastructure. According to him, Iran’s naval and air forces, air defense systems and a large part of the military leadership have been destroyed.
Trump claimed that Iran’s top strategic military commanders were killed in the operation, and claimed that the current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was seriously injured and 90 percent dead in a US-Israeli air strike in late February.
Mojtaba’s father and then-Supreme Leader Ali Khomeini were killed in the attack. Trump claimed that Mojtaba was absent from his father's public funeral in Iran and Iraq earlier this month while he was receiving treatment for serious injuries sustained in the attack.
Meanwhile, Trump said that the US would reimpose an "Iranian blockade" and charge commercial ships to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
He said on the social media platform "Truth Social" that the US would now play the role of "Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz", blocking the movement of Iranian ships and Iranian-related cargo, but allowing other countries to use the waterway freely.
These statements came after a week of missile attacks and counterattacks between the US and Iran. These attacks have jeopardized the interim agreement between the two countries on June 17.
The US carried out airstrikes on the Iranian cities of Abadan and Mashhad on Tuesday. Similarly, Iran has started tracking US soldiers by hacking mobile networks in West Asia, according to the Financial Times. US lawmakers are wary of the issue.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi has said the Iran war is a disaster for everyone. "This war, carried out without a mandate from the United Nations, is a disaster. No one has achieved its goals," he wrote in a French newspaper.
He said that the oil boom poses a greater regional threat to West Asia than Tehran.
