The US Midwest was gripped by a heatwave on Sunday. Temperatures from the northern plains to the Rocky Mountains broke previous records, the US National Weather Service said.

Initial reports indicated that temperatures in Utah's capital Salt Lake City and Montana's largest city Billings had reached 43 degrees Celsius.

The weather service said this was the highest temperature since records began in more than 150 years.

The high temperatures have hampered efforts to control wildfires in parts of Colorado and Utah. Meteorologists expect the extreme heat to continue through Tuesday.

Another heatwave hit the eastern US a week ago. Scientists say climate change is making extreme heat waves more frequent, longer-lasting and more intense around the world. Greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels are the main culprit.

Meanwhile, Western Europe experienced its hottest June on record. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1,300 people have died due to the recent heat wave there.
