South Korea's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a seven-year prison sentence for former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
This sentence was imposed on him on charges of declaring martial law in 2024, thereby undermining democracy and creating political instability.
"All appeals have been dismissed," a senior judge said in a televised address. He stated that there was no legal misunderstanding regarding the previous court's order.
Yoon's legal team expressed deep regret over this decision. The team concluded that the Supreme Court made such a decision without sufficient preparation.
"We will challenge this order through constitutional procedures, which will also include a constitutional complaint," one of Yoon's lawyers said.
Earlier, in January, a lower court had sentenced him to five years in prison for abuse of power. In that case, the appellate court had handed down a seven-year sentence.
The impeached president is currently in custody.
He has maintained that he imposed martial law inspired by the will of the people. However, the court called this a premeditated conspiracy. The court found that this caused significant social harm.
In another case, Yoon faces a 30-year prison sentence for sending drones to North Korea.
