Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Wednesday to have attacked dozens of US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. The strikes were in response to US military strikes, the Iranian state-run IRIB news agency said.
The statement said, "In response to this military action, the IRGC's Navy and Aerospace Forces have targeted 85 key US military facilities in the two countries through joint missile and drone operations." Iran also said it had shot down a US MQ-9 drone.
The US military launched a new round of airstrikes against Iran on Tuesday after three oil tankers were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. The US also canceled concessions to sell oil to Iran. The move has further strained an already fragile ceasefire between the two countries.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) carried out strikes on more than 80 sites in Iran on the same day that huge crowds gathered in the holy city of Qom to mourn the slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US said the strikes were aimed at forcing Iran to pay a "big price".
The US military command said it had struck more than 60 small boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to weaken Iran's ability to attack commercial vessels.
