At least 20 people were injured in a fire at a petrochemical plant in West Bengal today. Five of the injured are in critical condition, police said.
The fire broke out in a naphtha pipeline at a plant run by Haldia Petrochemicals. The fire spread rapidly in the area in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. According to police, 12 fire engines were deployed to control the fire.
The injured have been rescued and sent to nearby hospitals for treatment. Among the injured are plant workers and at least two security guards. Images from the scene showed thick black smoke coming from the burning pipeline and firefighters using water cannons to control the fire.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, police said. Haldia Petrochemicals said an investigation into the incident is underway.
