At least 1,430 people have been killed in a devastating earthquake that struck Venezuela on Wednesday. At least 68,900 people are missing, local authorities said.

Two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the city of Yumare, west of the capital Caracas, at 6 p.m. local time.

In the worst-hit state of La Guaira, authorities decided to allow only those with permits to enter the area from Friday night after traffic jams hampered search efforts.

Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez said 14,000 soldiers and police were patrolling the area. But residents in the disaster area have complained of a weak government presence.

Residents used hammers and power tools to cut away large chunks of concrete in a collapsed building in La Guerra. Nearby, Nazareth Jimenez cried, her head resting on the shoulder of her loved one.

Rescue workers continue to try to pull survivors from the rubble. An 18-day-old baby has been rescued after being trapped for 32 hours.

In the La Guerra area, which was hit hardest by the disaster, the baby's mother was pulled from the rubble 19 minutes after the baby was rescued. Rescue workers said they had minor injuries. The baby's father cried tears of joy upon seeing his child.

Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez said the incident brought hope to the disaster. Another video footage shows the successful rescue of a four-year-old boy trapped in the rubble of La Guerra within 24 hours. The child's parents were also successfully rescued.

Another video released by the US search and rescue team (Virginia Task Force One) shows a nine-month-old baby being pulled from the rubble. The child's mother was also rescued safely, and rescue workers said both mother and child suffered minor injuries.

'Even in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances, there is hope. Every life saved is a victory,' the team wrote.
