The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Venezuela has reached 920. Another 3,360 people were injured in the quake and at least 172 are still missing.
National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodriguez said in a speech on state television on Friday that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue.
Two powerful earthquakes have destroyed dozens of buildings in the country's north, including the capital Caracas. The injured are being treated in makeshift health camps in the affected areas.
Officials say the hardest-hit state of La Guaira, north of the capital, is the area's main port and main international airport, Simon Bolivar International Airport.
Hundreds of international rescue workers have arrived in Venezuela and more are on the way, according to a senior government official. So far, 243 people have been rescued safely in La Guaira alone.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said dozens of people had been rescued alive and had been reunited with their families. She said 214 aftershocks had been felt since the main quake.
Jorge Rodriguez said hundreds of buildings had been damaged or destroyed. At least 1,000 other structures, including hospitals and shopping malls, were among the damaged structures.
The second of two powerful earthquakes that struck within seconds of each other on Wednesday was measured at magnitude 7.5. It was considered one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit Venezuela in a century.
Foreign nationals also killed
Meanwhile, citizens of various countries have also been confirmed dead in the earthquake. Portugal reported 15 deaths, China seven, Spain at least five, Brazil two and Italy one.
Spain has announced a million euros in relief aid for those affected by the earthquake.
