The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday has reached 920. A large number of foreign nationals have also been killed.

According to reports so far, 15 Portuguese citizens or people of Portuguese descent have been confirmed dead in the earthquake. Portugal's foreign ministry had earlier said nine people were dead and 56 were missing.

China's state broadcaster CCTV quoted the Chinese embassy in Caracas as saying seven Chinese citizens had died. The embassy urged its citizens in Venezuela to be alert to aftershocks and other potential risks.

Spain also said at least five of its citizens had died and 119 were still missing. Spanish authorities said 14 people had been found in the rubble. Spain has announced a million euros in aid for relief efforts. According to official figures, about 147,000 Spanish citizens live in Venezuela.

Brazil's foreign ministry confirmed the deaths of two of its citizens in the earthquake and said it was providing consular assistance to their families.

A 50-year-old man born in Caracas and holding dual Italian and Venezuelan citizenship died after a building collapsed in the worst-hit La Guerra area, the Italian Foreign Ministry said. It is estimated that around 170,000 Italian passport holders are living in Venezuela.
