The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 1,094 cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The WHO said 277 people have died.

According to official figures released by the WHO on Tuesday, 387 patients are currently receiving treatment and 115 have recovered. Congolese authorities said 44 deaths are suspected and 131 cases are yet to be confirmed.

The spread and expansion of the disease is accelerating, said Abdirahman Mahamoud, director of the WHO's Health Emergency Alert and Response Operations, at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday.

He also said that treatment capacity has been increased in the past two weeks. "Treatment services have been increased from 19 health zones to a capacity of more than 500," he said.

Laboratory capacity has also been rapidly expanded, he said. At the beginning of the outbreak, around 30 people were being tested per day in the capital Kinshasa, but now more than 2,000 people are being tested per day through a network of eight decentralized laboratories in Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, he said.
