US Vice President JD Vance said the first round of US-Iran talks in Switzerland on Monday had laid a good foundation for a final deal.
'We have laid a very good foundation for a successful final deal,' Vance told reporters at the Bürgenstock resort. The talks began on Sunday and continued late into the night.
'If a final agreement for peace in the Middle East is a complete structure, we have laid the foundation for it with the talks in Switzerland. We have laid a successful foundation to get to a good place.'
'We all need to understand the importance of how much work has been done, but frankly there is still a lot of work to do. We are making progress on the nuclear talks, the economic talks, we are working to remove explosives from the waterways and ensure that the flow of traffic there increases again.'
'There has been a lot of progress but there is still some work to do. We are committed to doing exactly that.'
He said the strategically important Strait of Hormuz was “open.” He said millions of barrels of crude oil and natural gas that had been blocked in the past were now being transported. The US-Iran talks were held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar.
Vance said he would return to the US after the press conference. Meanwhile, he said discussions at a “technical level” would continue in Bürgenstock in the coming days and weeks.
He said the US could also release frozen assets once Iran ensures it does not fund terrorist groups. He said the talks in the Swiss resort had ensured this.
“If frozen Iranian assets are ever released, that investment will go to enrich American farmers and feed the Iranian people,” he said.
