Iran claims to have targeted ships in the Strait of Hormuz after the US launched a new round of military attacks on Iran.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had attacked two ships in the Strait of Hormuz after the US military launched a new series of attacks on Iran. The US attack came after US President Donald Trump accused Iran of delaying a deal to end the war and warned of more severe military action. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on Wednesday that the "self-defensive strike" was launched in response to Iran's "unprovoked and continued aggressive activities".
Iranian state media later reported that the IRGC had targeted two ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and the US have continued to engage in a series of counter-attacks targeting military and surveillance facilities since the ceasefire agreement in April.
Meanwhile, explosions were heard in the Persian Gulf cities of Bandar Abbas and Sirik, as well as on the Qeshm Island.
In response to the US attack, Iranian state media claimed that the Strait of Hormuz was completely closed to all types of ships. However, CENTCOM said that commercial shipping was still allowed.
The announcement of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz sent crude oil prices soaring in international markets. Brent crude, the global benchmark, rose by about 2 percent in Asian morning trading to above $95 a barrel.
Hours before the latest US attack, President Trump had warned Iran, saying, “We hit hard yesterday and we will hit hard again today.”
Trump had accused the Iranian leadership of taking too long to reach an agreement on his social media account, Truth Social. In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused the US of undermining the diplomatic process by sending conflicting messages.
Responding to Trump's remarks, Iranian President Masoud Pezizkian said that Iran will not bow to any pressure or threats and will remain firm in its stance.
