Anti-immigration groups have staged protests in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in response to a knife attack. Vehicles and buildings have been set on fire during the protests. A Sudanese national has been arrested in connection with the stabbing. One person was seriously injured in the attack. Many of the protesters on Tuesday wore masks. They gathered in a central area of the city and set fire to a bus and several cars. A building near the city centre was also set on fire. Local residents told AFP that protesters had set fire to rubbish bins and thrown petrol bombs. Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill has strongly condemned the protests and urged calm. "The act of a group of masked people setting fire to homes and forcing families to flee is nothing short of despicable cowardice," she said. "Racism, intimidation and violence are wrong wherever they occur." There can be no excuse or justification for tonight's attacks. No one wants to see this on our streets, so I appeal for peace again.' The suspect in the knife attack in north Belfast on Monday night was charged with attempted murder, possession of a sharp weapon in a public place and making threats to kill on Tuesday.
Police said the man suffered serious eye injuries in the attack. A kitchen knife found at the scene left deep cuts to his face and back.
"Last night's attempted murder has caused a range of emotions from fear to anger," Northern Ireland's Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson told a news conference.
He had declared the incident a 'serious situation'. He said: 'I appeal for calm and for the safety of all communities as we respond to this incident.'
Video of the attack shows members of the public trying to stop the attacker before police arrive. Senior police officials have said that the victim's life was saved because of them.
