The United States and Iran, which have been engaged in indirect peace talks to end the Iran-Iraq war for nearly three and a half months, have resumed their offensive and counter-attacks. Iran has attacked US military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that the strikes were in response to US attacks on Iranian ports and islands in the Strait of Hormuz. These included the US Fifth Fleet, the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, and the Azraq Air Base in Jordan. The IRGC said that a drone was fired at Al Salem and a long-range missile was fired at Azraq.

The IRGC said that 21 US military sites were targeted, four of which were destroyed. The IRGC claimed that it destroyed an F-35 fighter jet maintenance and storage station at a military base in Jordan. Similarly, the IRGC claimed that an American MQ-9 drone was shot down over the Iranian city of Jam.  On Tuesday morning, the US military attacked the Qeshm Islands and Iranian coastal ports in the Strait of Hormuz. The US attacked Iran, accusing it of shooting down its Apache helicopter. But Iran has not yet commented on the downing of the Apache helicopter. Iranian media reported that the US attack damaged a telecommunications tower in the city of Sirik. Similarly, two water tanks there were also destroyed.

On Tuesday morning, America's ally Israel also attacked the city of Tyre in Lebanon. A camp where Palestinian refugees live was also attacked. In response, Hezbollah also attacked Israel. Hezbollah said that the attack targeted Israeli soldiers in the city of Bayda on the southwestern front. Similarly, it said that a new military operation has been launched in the city of Nabatiya. Just a few days ago, Israel captured the Beaufort Castle in the city. The Israeli army has also intensified its attack on Nihama, north of the Litani River. It is increasingly capturing more territory.

More than 7,000 people have died in the Iran war so far. On February 28, the US-Israeli joint attack on Iran killed top commanders, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, in the first target. US President Trump had claimed that the Iran war would end within three weeks. On the contrary, more than three and a half months have passed since the war began. Due to the war, Iran is causing great damage to US military installations in West Asia. Similarly, maintaining control of the Strait of Hormuz has led to a global increase in the price of crude oil and natural gas and deepening the crisis. Washington and Tehran agreed to a ceasefire in April. On April 11 and 12, the two countries sat down at the negotiating table in Islamabad, Pakistan. However, the talks failed to materialize. Since then, despite repeated efforts to reach a peace agreement, they have not been fruitful.

The US has not commented on the latest developments. Earlier on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump, posting on the social media platform Truth Social, said that peace talks with Iran would be concluded within a day or two. He also warned Israel not to worsen the atmosphere of war and to stop the attacks on Iran and Lebanon.

The already fragile US-Iran ceasefire is at risk of being disrupted by the latest attacks and counterattacks. Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's Student News Network quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bagai as saying that talks with the US were being 'reviewed'. He made this comment shortly after the US attacked Iranian ports. Bagai accused the US and Israel of repeatedly violating the ceasefire. Shortly after that, Iran also launched attacks across West Asia.

West Asian countries have criticized Iran's latest attacks. Egypt's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday strongly condemned Iran's attacks on Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait. "These attacks are a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our nations. They pose a threat to the security and stability of the entire region," the ministry said in a statement. The UAE's Foreign Ministry expressed its full solidarity with Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. Qatar's Foreign Ministry said Iran carried out the attacks in clear violation of international law.

Meanwhile, Iran has accused the US and Israel of depriving 20,000 Iranians of drinking water when they attacked various reservoirs. Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing an official, said on Wednesday that at least 20,000 Iranians were deprived of drinking water when two reservoirs were hit. According to local official Hamzehpur, the reservoirs provided drinking water to the city of Kohestak and 10 surrounding villages. Officials estimate the damage caused by the attack to be around 140 billion tomans, or $795,000. Emergency measures, including tanker trucks and temporary pumping systems, are currently being implemented, the report said.

Analyst Elijah Magnier told Al Jazeera that despite the latest clashes, the chances of a major conflict between the two countries are low. “The US wants to protect its troops and restore freedom of movement. That is why it is attacking to show its dominance. On the other hand, Iran is trying to send a message that it will pay for every attack on it,” he said. “But neither side seems to want an unlimited and large-scale war because the costs are high.” The cost of the war is already huge, as it affects the energy, security and global markets of the Gulf. That is why both sides do not want to go to war.’
