Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations. According to Chinese media Xinhua, the two leaders agreed to carry forward the traditional friendship between the two countries for generations. On Tuesday, Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan were given a tour of the China-North Korea Friendship Tower in Pyongyang by Kim and his wife Ri Sol Ju.

Recalling that China and North Korea fought together in 1950, they pledged to preserve various monuments built in memory of those who fought in the war, hold special programs for revolutionary traditions and youth education.

Xi visited North Korea after seven years. He had previously met with Kim in Beijing last September.

Chinese state media reported that Xi and his wife were accorded a high-level welcome upon landing at Pyongyang International Airport on Monday. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un rolled out a red carpet to greet them. Xi was also given a military salute.

Chinese state media CCTV reported that Xi said China was ready to expand cooperation in a wide range of areas, including trade, agriculture, construction and technology. North Korea has been drawing closer to Russia in recent years.

North Korea has deployed a large number of troops on behalf of Russia in the Ukraine war. Similarly, Russia's support for North Korea's nuclear weapons program is increasing.

Xi, alarmed by North Korea's growing closeness to Russia, said the two countries should strengthen strategic cooperation and resolutely safeguard their respective sovereignty and security interests.
