At least 21 people have died in a fire at a hotel in New Delhi, India. 17 of the dead are foreigners.

The fire broke out at a restaurant in the Flora Stay hotel in Malviya Nagar, south Delhi, at 8:50 am, officials said. The fire spread to the hotel rooms. The hotel is frequented by foreigners.

In a public video after the incident, people are seen running to the third and fourth floors to save their lives. Locals have also laid mattresses on the ground to protect these people.

40 people have been rescued, Indian media Dainik Bhaskar reported. Some are in critical condition. According to the Delhi Fire Service, initial investigations indicate that the fire may have started near a staircase on the ground floor. Officials said that people had difficulty in escaping due to the windows being closed. Officials said that the exact cause of the fire will be known only after a detailed forensic investigation. During the rescue operation, fire fighters also found LPG cylinders in the building premises.
