US President Donald Trump has claimed that Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to withdraw from the ongoing fighting in Lebanon. Trump had held telephone talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and indirect talks with the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah through mediators.
Earlier, Iran had warned that the dialogue process with the US could be disrupted if Israel continued its attacks on Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. In a conversation with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Iranian Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that Iran would retaliate against Israel if the attacks on Lebanon did not stop. ‘We have been making serious efforts to stop the Israeli attacks for the last two days. If such crimes continue, we will not only suspend the dialogue process. We will even attack the Jewish state,' Ghalibaf said, 'If an agreement is reached between Iran and the United States to end the war, it will be implemented on all fronts, including Lebanon.'
Iranian state media reported that Iran had boycotted a high-level meeting with the United States scheduled for Tuesday in protest of the Israeli attack on Lebanon. However, ignoring all these developments, the Israeli government had prepared for an attack on the southern region of Beirut. On Monday, Trump called Netanyahu to pressure him to stop the attack. US media reported that Trump cursed and insulted Netanyahu during the phone call. According to another US official, Trump was also concerned about the large number of civilians killed by Israel in Lebanon. He objected to the fact that the Israelis were demolishing entire buildings in the name of eliminating a Hezbollah commander. Trump and Netanyahu have had several tense phone conversations in the past. But they have been working together on Iran and other issues. According to a US official, Trump has not had such a heated phone conversation with Netanyahu since he was elected president for a second term.
Israeli forces have entered Lebanon in recent days and captured a large amount of territory. According to the international media AP, this is the first time in the last 25 years that Israel has captured so much territory in Lebanon. After capturing the strategically important Beaufort Castle on Sunday, the Israeli army had planned an attack targeting the Lebanese capital Beirut. However, immediately after the telephone conversation, Trump announced via the social network Truth Social that no Israeli soldiers would go to Beirut. He said that the soldiers on their way to Beirut have also begun to return.
‘I had a very good and productive phone call with Netanyahu. No soldiers will go to Beirut and those on the way have also begun to return,’ Trump wrote. Netanyahu confirmed that he had spoken to Trump on the subject. However, he said that Israel had warned Trump in the telephone conversation that it would attack Beirut even harder if Hezbollah did not stop the attack. Netanyahu also said that the Israeli army would continue its operations in southern Lebanon as planned. Hezbollah did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
