Police arrested five people on Sunday in connection with the attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee in West Bengal. Police said that the attackers were arrested in an overnight raid based on CCTV footage and videos from the area where the attack took place.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has called the attack on her nephew Abhishek a conspiracy. She said, "If Abhishek had not worn a helmet, he could have died on the spot." She said that Abhishek's body was covered in blood in the attack.

Abhishek was admitted to the hospital after the attack. Mamata alleges that pressure was exerted to not seek treatment at the hospital.

Abhishek Banerjee was beaten up on Saturday in South Sonarpur, West Bengal. He had gone there to meet TMC workers who were victims of the post-election violence.

TMC has alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party workers surrounded her and shouted slogans and beat her up. She was pelted with stones, shoes and eggs and her shirt was also torn. She was taken out of the place wearing a helmet.

Mamata held a press conference after meeting her nephew Abhishek at the hospital. Mamata alleged in the press conference that the doctors and hospital administration were threatened by the BJP leader and DCP of South Kolkata not to treat her.

She also raised questions about why Abhishek was kept in the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) if his condition was not serious. She also accused the hospital administration of being under pressure from the BJP as to why the hospital suddenly advised him to go home. She also informed that now Abhishek will be treated at home.
