Israel has claimed that the new commander of the military wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Mohammed Odeh, has been killed. Odeh was appointed as the new commander after the killing of former Hamas commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad in an Israeli airstrike on May 15. At least three Palestinians were killed in a fierce attack on a busy market in Gaza City on Tuesday, according to local doctors and witnesses. Dozens were injured.

Israel said Odeh had been under surveillance by Israeli security forces for months. Hamas had no immediate comment.

Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire in Gaza despite a ceasefire with Hamas in October. On Tuesday, on the eve of Eid al-Adha, Israel attacked the top three floors of the al-Qayali building as people were busy shopping in Gaza City.

Israel has claimed that the attack was based on information that Odeh was hiding in the area.
