A gunman who opened fire at a security checkpoint near the White House has been killed.

Al Jazeera reported that the man was shot dead by Secret Service officers, the federal agency responsible for protecting the US president. A civilian was also injured in the shooting. The suspect arrived at the Secret Service checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, at around 6 p.m. US time on Saturday. He pulled a weapon from his bag and began shooting at security personnel stationed there.

The Secret Service confirmed the incident and said that according to initial investigations, the man had hidden the weapon in his bag.

The man was injured when security personnel returned fire. He was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead by doctors.
