US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India on Saturday. He arrived in India a week after the China-US summit. Rubio began his four-day, India visit from Kolkata, India. He is scheduled to visit the headquarters of the late Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata. After this event, Rubio will go to New Delhi and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the US State Department said. The Quad member countries Australia, India, Japan and the US will participate in the foreign ministerial meeting on May 26.

Indian media reported that fuel security will be discussed with priority in the meeting between Modi and Rubio. The Strait of Hormuz has been blocked since the war in Iran. India imports about 80 percent of its crude oil and a large amount of natural gas from abroad. Before the war, about 55 percent of crude oil came to India from West Asia.

But with the outbreak of the war, India's dependence on Russian oil has increased due to the disruption of this waterway. Similarly, the price of crude oil and other consumer goods has increased in India. The impact of the Iran war is being felt in daily life in India, which has a population of about 1.4 billion.

The US wants to sell fuel to India. 'The more they buy, the more we want to sell fuel, and on the other hand, our production and exports are now growing at a historic pace,' Rubio said.

India's purchase of American oil will also reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries. In 2025, the US had a trade deficit of $58.2 billion with India. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that this trade deficit should be reduced. But it is not easy to bring oil from the US to India. The distance between the two countries is very long. 'Energy security will be the main topic of this visit. Because the situation in Iran does not seem to be resolved right now,' Vineet Prakash, associate professor of American studies at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, told the BBC. 'The US has already given India a concession to buy Russian oil. But Delhi wants more concessions.'

Delhi-Washington relations were tense for some time after the US decided to increase customs duties on India last year. The Trump administration, which imposed a 50 percent tariff on 50 Indian goods for about 10 months, reduced the customs duty to 18 percent after talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year.

India has not yet accepted the US's claim of mediation in the India-Pakistan conflict. Whereas, Pakistani President Shahbaz Sharif had thanked the US for this work. Trump has repeatedly claimed that India and Pakistan have reached a ceasefire under his mediation. Trump has been publicly praising Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir. India has not liked this.

Pakistan is also currently trying to mediate talks between Iran and the US. Associate Professor Prakash said that since it shares a long border with Iran, it is natural for Pakistan to mediate the talks. Prakash said that although informal discussions were held about Pakistan during Rubio's visit, the issue of Pakistan will not be mentioned publicly.
