After the 'Cockroach Janata Party' went viral in India, a 'Cockroach campaign' has also been launched in Pakistan. Indian media outlets have reported that pages like 'Cockroach Awami Party' (CAP) and 'Cockroach Awami League' (CAL) have appeared in Pakistan. In India, in mid-May, after Chief Justice Suryakant called the youth "sangla" (cockroach) and "parasite", youth expressed their dissatisfaction on social media. Shortly after, Abhijeet Deepke, a public relations graduate and former Aam Aadmi Party aide living in the US, launched the social media-based 'Cockroach Janata Party' on May 16 by running a membership campaign through 'Google Forms'. In about a week, the campaign went viral on social media. Within a few days, the party's Instagram account has gained over 15 million followers, surpassing the official handles of both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress. Suryakant later clarified that his remarks were not aimed at all unemployed youth. He also said that his remarks had been tampered with. The group, which presents itself as the voice of "hungry and unemployed" youth, has raised issues related to education, healthcare, job opportunities, exam reforms and accountability. The party's 'X' account was shut down in India on Thursday, but the party resurfaced under another handle. 'Did you think you could get rid of us? Hahaha...,' the new handle read.
As soon as it gained traction in India, similar pages started appearing in Pakistan. A page on Instagram called ‘Kakroch Awami Party’ wrote in its bio: ‘This is a fake, but what does it mean to us?
Our slogan is the same.’
The account, which uses green and white branding, says it aims to be ‘the real voice of every generation in Pakistan.’ It also claims to be an alternative to mainstream political parties.
Many similar accounts have also appeared on social media platform ‘X’. One page describes itself as “We are the voice of those people whom the system has considered as shackles (cockroaches).” Similarly, another page of ‘Kakroch Awami League’ uses the slogan ‘We are alive in every situation.’
