The United Nations says a civilian is killed every 14 minutes in conflict zones around the world in 2025. This includes children and civilians trying to flee their homes, workplaces, schools, roads and other areas.
Explosive weapons planted in various areas have not only claimed lives but also destroyed essential infrastructure such as power grids, water distribution systems, schools and hospitals, Adam Wosornu, Director of the Crisis Response Division for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), told the Security Council on the protection of civilians in armed conflict.
He said civilians are often the direct victims of conflict, even if they are not targeted. The United Nations recorded more than 1,350 attacks on medical facilities in 18 conflicts around the world last year.
UN officials have also pointed to the growing hunger crisis caused by conflict, saying that about 147 million people are facing food insecurity by 2025.
Noting that there have been several confirmed cases of famine and food insecurity in recent times, they said this situation has arisen not only due to food shortages but also due to the hostility of the conflicting parties, creating obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid.
