Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned of a "conflict" with the US over the Taiwan issue.

Citing Chinese state media, the BBC reported that he called it "the most important issue in China-US relations". US President Donald Trump is currently in Beijing on a state visit. "If it is handled properly, bilateral relations can generally remain stable," Xi said. "However, if it is not handled properly, the two countries may collide or even go into conflict, which could put the entire China-US relationship in a very dangerous situation."

Xi said that Taiwan's independence was fundamentally incompatible with peace in the Taiwan Strait.

He also said that peace in the Taiwan Strait was "the biggest common ground between China and the US".
