CNN founder Ted Turner has died at the age of 87. CNN confirmed his death in a statement issued by Turner Enterprises. However, the cause of death was not disclosed.
In 2018, Turner said that he had ‘Lebby Body Dementia’. This is a ‘degenerative nerve disease’. After the Cable News Network (CNN) was launched in 1980 with his investment, a 24-hour news culture developed on television. US President Donald Trump paid tribute to Turner, saying that he was a great figure in the history of broadcasting.
CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson said that Turner was a committed and fearless leader. Initially, many predicted that CNN would not succeed. However, in 1981, the media organization became popular after it updated and continuously and rapidly broadcasted the news of the assassination attempt on US President Ronald Reagan. It also brought the news of the Challenger space shuttle disaster to the public very quickly in 1986.
The organization reached the peak of its popularity after its live broadcast from Iraq during the 1990-91 Gulf War. The then President George Bush once said, "I learned more from CNN than from the CIA." CNN's success inspired the opening of other news channels in the United States. In 1996, Turner sold his company, Turner Broadcasting Systems, which operates companies including CNN, to Time Warner. He stayed with the company for a few years as a vice president. He then resigned in 2003.
Born in Cincinnati in 1938, Turner inherited his father's billboard business in 1970. He then increased his wealth by investing in entertainment, news, sports, and other fields. Turner was also a world-class rower. He won the America's Cup in 1977. He is also a major philanthropist. He has donated $1 billion to the United Nations. Similarly, he spent a large amount of money on the health of women, children and the poor around the world, humanitarian crises, education, youth empowerment, and other areas. Turner, one of the world's leading environmental engineers, is one of the most land-owning people in America.
