West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been defeated in the assembly elections. In Bhavanipur, she was defeated by Subendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by about 15,105 votes, Indian media outlet Telegraph India reported.

The BJP has won a clear majority in the elections. According to the latest results published in the Hindustan Times, the BJP has won 176 seats. It is also leading in 33 seats. Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) has won 60 seats and is leading in 18 more seats.

The TMC, led by Banerjee, had ruled Bengal by winning a majority in three consecutive elections in 2011, 2016 and 2021. This election result has pushed the TMC into the opposition.
