Nine people have died in a fire that broke out in a four-storey building in Vivek Vihar in Delhi's Shahdara area.

Nine people died in the fire that broke out on Sunday morning, while 10 to 15 people were rescued, Indian media reported, citing security officials.

Two people were injured. Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Sanjay Goel, who reached the spot, said the fire broke out at around 4 am.

He said the fire spread to all four floors in an instant and some people lost their lives when they could not open the doors. Police said some bodies were completely burnt and only some skeletons remained.

In the initial investigation, the police said the fire was caused by a short circuit. Some locals said the fire broke out after an AC exploded.
