A growing hunger crisis in South Sudan could push 7.8 million people into extreme food insecurity between April and July 2026, international organizations have warned. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said in their latest Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC) report. The report shows that 56 percent of South Sudan's population is currently facing acute food insecurity. UN agencies say the crisis is being exacerbated by conflict, mass displacement, economic decline, climate change and reduced agricultural production. The IPC report is a global initiative coordinated by UN agencies, regional partners and aid organizations that categorizes food insecurity into five different stages.
