Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had attended an election rally in Siliguri, near the Nepali border, on the eve of the West Bengal assembly elections on April 11, reached Sikkim on Monday. Modi reached Sikkim on Monday afternoon to attend the celebrations organized on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the establishment of the state of Sikkim. Modi landed at the Libbing Helipad in Gangtok by an army helicopter at around 3 pm. He is scheduled to visit the Orchidarium in Gangtok at around 9:30 am on Tuesday. The Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park has been developed as a world-class 'Orchid Experience Center' with the aim of promoting the biodiversity and floral heritage of Sikkim. After that, Prime Minister Modi will participate in the closing ceremony of the golden jubilee celebrations of the establishment of the state of Sikkim to be held at the Paljor Stadium at around 10 am. On the occasion, he is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of various projects worth more than Rs 4,000 crore, said Birendra Tamling, the Chief Minister's political advisor. He said, "The Prime Minister has also scheduled a special address from the Paljor Stadium."
The projects will focus on infrastructure, transport, health, education, energy, urban development, environmental protection, tourism and agriculture. "This is expected to accelerate the overall and inclusive development of Sikkim," Tamling said.
On the health front, the foundation stone of a 100-bed Ayurveda hospital will be laid in Yanggang in Namchi district. In addition, a National Technical Institute and a 30-bed 'Sowa Rigpa' hospital will be inaugurated.
On the education front, Sikkim University will be established in Yanggang The permanent campus, the administrative building of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose University of Excellence in Chakung, Helen Lepcha Medical College in Sochegang, Gangtok and the professional college in Dentam, Gyalsing will be inaugurated.
Similarly, a new postgraduate college will be inaugurated in Mangshila in Mangaon district, a model residential school in Hi-Gyathang and a building with a hostel in Bumtar Gumba in Namchi. Tamling said that an information technology-based educational infrastructure expansion program will also be launched in 160 schools in Sikkim.
To strengthen the transport network, the foundation stone for the construction of two double-lane steel arch bridges at Sirwani and Lower Samdong over the Teesta River will be laid. The Birdhang-Namchi road upgradation project will also be inaugurated.
In the energy sector, the Gangtok Transmission and Distribution System Improvement and Expansion Project will be inaugurated, which will make electricity supply more reliable.
To promote tourism, structures related to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet and a Yatri Niwas will be inaugurated at Krishna Pranam Mangaldham in Namping.
