President Donald Trump safely evacuated after shots fired outside White House Correspondents' Dinner .

President Trump and the first lady were quickly evacuated from the event at the Washington Hilton Hotel on Saturday evening after shots were fired outside.

Trump posted on Truth Social that he and his cabinet members were safe and would hold a press conference from the White House soon. "The first lady, the vice president and all the cabinet members are completely safe," Trump said.

Footage from the scene showed Trump and other attendees hiding behind tables after the shooting, where people were shouting "get down" and "stay down."

Trump was then quickly evacuated by Secret Service agents and the venue was surrounded by heavily armed security.

Al Jazeera producer Chris Sheridan said he heard about five rounds of gunfire outside the ballroom. “We smelled gunfire. We immediately fell to the ground. It was right behind me,” he said. “I can’t say how far away, but it was definitely coming from the back door of the ballroom.”

Trump also praised the work of the US Secret Service and local law enforcement. “They acted quickly and bravely,” he said. He recommended the event go ahead, but said the final decision would be up to law enforcement.

The US Secret Service said the shooting occurred in a “screening area” and that one person was taken into custody. “The conditions of the individuals involved are still unclear, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation,” the agency said. Sheridan also said there was a large police presence around the hotel.

Trump was previously attacked in 2024. He was injured in his right ear in the shooting at the election rally.
