The US West Asia Command (CENTCOM) has said that two of its ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz. But Iran has denied the claim.

The US destroyers ship, the USS Frank E. Peterson and the USS Michael Murphy, have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, Centcom said. “Our two ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz as part of a larger operation to remove sea-based bombs planted by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC),” Centcom said.

The US Navy’s presence in the Strait has been critical during the war with Iran that began on February 28. “Today, we have begun the process of establishing a new route. We will soon share this safe passage with the maritime industry to encourage the free flow of trade,” the statement said.

Nearly 20 percent of the world's oil and gas flows through the Strait of Hormuz. That is why the blockage in this strait has now caused a global energy crisis.

Iran closed the strait after the US-Israeli attack on February 28. As a result, commercial and military ships were stranded here.

On Saturday, a spokesman for the Iranian military's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters denied the US claim. "We strongly refute the claim of the CENTCOM commander regarding the access and entry of US ships into the Strait of Hormuz," the spokesman said. "The movement and movement of any ship is in the hands of the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps will respond strongly to any ship trying to leave here without Iran's permission."

Iran and the US are currently in a two-week-long ceasefire. The two sides have been holding talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, since Saturday.
