Russia has condemned the US-Israeli 'illegal and unnecessary' attack on Iran. The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement calling for an immediate ceasefire.

The war is escalating the international crisis, the statement said. The statement issued on Monday said the scale and brutality of the attacks were increasing. The statement said that not only the military but also civilian infrastructure were targeted in these attacks.

Particular concern has been expressed over the repeated attacks on the Bushehr nuclear power plant. The statement said that such attacks risked causing a radiological epidemic much larger than the Chernobyl epidemic.

'The conflict has already claimed the lives of thousands of civilians, including women and children.  Schools, hospitals and cultural heritage sites have been destroyed. Diplomatic and consular missions have been attacked, which is a violation of the Vienna Convention,' the statement said.

The ministry said the situation was rapidly deteriorating and was at risk of spiraling out of control. It also welcomed the mediation efforts of Pakistan, Turkey and China.
