General George Randy, the head of the US Army, has resigned as the Iran war continues. However, the resignation was not voluntary but came after pressure created by the Trump administration, US military officials have told CNN.

A security official told CNN that along with General George, two other senior military officers also resigned on Thursday. “On Thursday, Hegseth also fired two other military chiefs,” the official said. “Chief of Champions Maj. Gen. William Green Jr. and Army Transformation and Training Command chief David Hodne were fired.”

The three generals resigned under pressure from Hegseth the day after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about the Iran war.

Trump had signaled that the US would intensify its attack on Iran. He also said that the Iran war would end within two to three weeks.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed George's retirement on Thursday, writing on social media, "General Randy A. George is retiring from his position as the 41st chief of staff, effective immediately. The Department of War is grateful for General George's decades of service to our nation."

Thursday's sudden announcement caught senior military leadership by surprise, another U.S. official told CNN.

"George learned he was being removed from a phone call from Hegseth while he was in a meeting on Thursday. He then spoke to his staff privately about the announcement. His staff was very upset," the official said.

As chief of staff, George had a very good relationship with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. Secretary of War Hegseth had seen Driscoll as a challenge.

On the other hand, George also had a good relationship with Lloyd Austin, who was the Secretary of Defense in the Biden administration. While Austin was the minister, he also served as a senior military aide.

George's retirement during the Iran war is seen as meaningful. As the chief of staff, George was coordinating with the Air Force. Similarly, he also advised Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Kenney and Hegseth.

George began his career at the US Military Academy at West Point in 1988. He also served as a senior military aide to Lloyd Austin, who was the Secretary of Defense in the Biden administration.

He has been serving as the Chief of Army Staff since September 2023.

After George's retirement, Adjutant General Chris Lane will become the new acting Chief of Army Staff. He has a very good relationship with Secretary of War Hegseth. Pentagon officials have said he is expected to replace George in the future when he takes over as deputy chief of staff.

Lanev has been in the military since 1990. He served briefly as commander of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He then served as commanding general of the Army in South Korea.
