A Russian oil tanker has arrived in Cuba, which is facing an acute fuel shortage. The Anatoly Kolodkin ship carrying 730,000 barrels of crude oil stopped at the port of Mata Najas, east of Havana, on Tuesday morning.

After the US kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, crude oil has stopped coming to Cuba from there.

The US, the European Union and the UK have long imposed sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. The US did not stop the oil tanker sent by Russia.

White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt said the Russian ship was allowed to enter Cuba on humanitarian grounds. "There has been no substantive change in our sanctions policy on Russia," she said.

Earlier, fuel shortages had caused power outages in many parts of Cuba. "We are grateful to the Russian government and people for all the support we are receiving. This is a valuable shipment that has arrived in the midst of the complex energy situation we are facing," Cuban Minister of Energy and Mines Vicente de Levy wrote on the social media platform X.

The Trump administration tightened the blockade in an attempt to pressure Cuba's communist government. Trump claimed that the Cuban government would soon fall.
