The United Nations has created a new task force to ensure the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
It is being led by the UN's senior logistics officer, Jorge Moreira da Silva.
Its main objective is to protect ships carrying food (fertilizer) and related raw materials.
In New York, Ali Bahreni, the UN ambassador to Iran, said Iran had agreed to help ships carrying humanitarian aid. According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, if successful, this initiative could build confidence for a diplomatic solution.
The task force will include representatives from organizations such as UNCTAD, the International Maritime Organization (IAO) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
