Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has claimed that Iranian Intelligence Minister Ismail Khatib was involved in Monday night's attack. Iran has not commented on the matter. Khatib was appointed intelligence minister by then-President Ebrahim Raisi in 2021. Khatib studied Islamic scripture with senior clerics, including Iran's former Supreme Leader, the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on him in 2022 for allegedly engaging in cyber activities against his country. The BBC reported that Khatib joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Earlier on Monday, Iranian Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani and Basij paramilitary commander Gholamreza Soleimani were killed in an Israeli strike.
