Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has claimed that Iran's top security official Ali Larijani and the commander of the paramilitary Basij force, Gholamreza Soleimani, have been killed.
Katz claimed that the two leaders were killed during the Israeli military's strike on Monday night. He said that several commanders of the Basij force were targeted.
'Last night, more than a dozen Basij officers, including the head of the Basij force, Gholamreza Soleimani, were targeted in various attacks in Iran.' This was a joint US and Israeli effort,' Fox News wrote, citing an Israeli military official.
The war between the US and Iran has entered its 17th day. Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has prevented more than 20 percent of the world's oil and natural gas from leaving the Middle East. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had urged NATO member states to send military ships to open the Strait of Hormuz.
He warned that NATO's situation would be much worse if it did not receive military support from its allies. However, no country is deciding to send military aircraft.
On Tuesday, Israel carried out airstrikes on Tehran and Beirut in Lebanon. In response, Iran is also attacking Gulf countries. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait said they had intercepted Iranian missiles.
Amnesty International's investigation has shown that the US was involved in the attack on an Iranian elementary school. At least 170 people were killed in the attack, most of them schoolgirls.
Germany has said it has no plans to join a war between the US and Israel.
