At least 10 patients have died in a fire at the ICU of the SCB Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, India. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the fire broke out due to an electrical short circuit in the trauma ICU ward where the patients were being treated. Confirming that 23 patients were being treated at the time of the incident, he said the remaining patients had been shifted to other wards. At least 11 staff members were injured in burns while trying to save the patients, he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on social media and said that compensation would be provided to the affected families.
Earlier, in 2024, at least six people died and more than two dozen were injured in a fire at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu. The same year, ten newborns died in a fire at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh.
