The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that between 600,000 and 1 million families have been displaced in Iran since the war. The UNHCR estimates that about 3.2 million of those families have been displaced. The UNHCR said that most of the people are fleeing Tehran and northern Iran to seek safety in other cities. The US-Israeli coalition has carried out a major offensive against Tehran and other northern cities since February 28. The attack has also caused a humanitarian crisis, with public infrastructure, hospitals and schools under attack.
Those who came to Iran from Afghanistan a few years ago seeking refuge are facing additional problems. “Afghans are particularly vulnerable due to their already precarious situation and limited support networks. They have had limited access to essential services and increased insecurity,” the UNHCR said.
The war began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran. In the first day of the attack, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed. Ali Khamenei, along with top military commanders and civilians, were killed. According to Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir-Saeed Irvani, the death toll in Iran so far is at least 1,348. He also said that more than 17,000 were injured. So far, seven American soldiers have been killed in the war. Similarly,
140 people were injured
. The US Department of Defense said that most of them are in good condition. 108 have returned to duty. The US has been carrying out a heavy attack on cities including Tehran since last Tuesday. Israel is also attacking Lebanon. US President Donald Trump has declared victory in the war. Addressing a Republican Party election rally in Harbin, Kentucky, he said, "We have won the war. But we do not want to go back soon." He claimed that the US had shot down 85 percent of Iran's drones. “We burned their factories,” Trump said, “We don’t want to go there every two years. So we’ll get the job done,” Trump said.
Despite Trump’s claims, Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and regular forces have been carrying out drone and missile attacks on Israel and various parts of the Middle East. The IRGC has warned that no ship should be active in transporting oil in the Strait of Hormuz.
It had warned that not even a liter of oil would be allowed to leave the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, US intelligence had claimed that Iran had started laying underwater bombs in the Hormuz area.
Meanwhile, two oil tankers were attacked in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Iraq on Thursday. 38 crew members were rescued in the incident and one person was killed, said Saad Maan, head of Iraq’s security media cell.
In the last 48 hours, six ships, including those from Japan and Thailand, have been attacked in the waters of West Asia. However, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The rising tension in Hormuz has caused an energy crisis worldwide. The International Energy Association (IEA), an organization of energy-producing countries, has decided to open the largest storage facility in history, but oil prices have not fallen.
The IEA, which includes the US, UK and most Western countries, had earlier decided to release 400 million barrels of oil from the strategic reserves of member countries and send it to the market.
However, oil prices have risen globally. On Thursday, the price of international benchmark Brent crude rose above $100. Earlier, its price had risen to a maximum of $120 on Monday.
However, the price fell slightly on Tuesday after Donald Trump announced that the war would end soon. On Wednesday, the market price rose again and reached $100 by Thursday.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution condemning Iran's attacks on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan. The resolution, presented to the 15-member council, was passed by a vote of 13-0. China and Russia abstained from the vote.
The resolution was sponsored by the UAE. More than 135 countries supported it. The resolution strongly condemned Iran's attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, calling them a violation of international law.
The UAE's permanent representative to the United Nations, Mohammed Abushahab, said that cities and critical infrastructure in the UAE were targeted. While the UAE has made it clear that its territory or airspace will not be used to attack Iran, he said that Iran's attack is unjust.
Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga has put forward three main conditions for ending the war. President Pezeshkian said that the war will not stop until there is international recognition of its sovereignty, compensation for the infrastructure destroyed in the Israeli-American attack and the civilians killed, and international guarantees that there will be no further attacks.
He made this announcement via the social network X. He also said that he had previously spoken with the leaders of Russia and Pakistan.
