At least 48 people have died in floods caused by heavy rains in the Gamo region of southern Ethiopia, police confirmed on Wednesday.
The Southern Ethiopia Regional State Police Commission said in a statement that the death toll from the natural disaster in three districts of the Gamo region has risen to 48.
Police said at least 95 people were missing in the floods and search and rescue operations were ongoing. East Africa has been hit by major flooding in recent days.
Dozens have died in neighboring Kenya after heavy rains lashed the capital Nairobi and other areas on Friday. Several studies have shown that heavy rains and prolonged droughts have been following the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in East Africa over the past 20 years.
Scientists have long warned that human-driven climate change is increasing the likelihood, duration and severity of severe weather events such as torrential rains.
