Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been elected as the new Supreme Leader.

Ali Khamenei led Iran from 1989 until his death. He was killed in a US airstrike on February 28. Iran's 88-member Assembly of Experts, which is responsible for vetting and selecting the Supreme Leader, said on Monday that Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen after "extensive and detailed discussions."

Born in 1969, Mojtaba is the second of six children of Ali Khamenei. As a young man, he fought as a volunteer during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s. He then studied in Qom, a major center of Shiite theology.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has pledged its loyalty to the new supreme leader.

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, thanked the experts for calling the meeting despite the ongoing Israeli-American airstrikes.

He said the selection of the new supreme leader was completed in a timely and orderly manner.

US President Donald Trump had said that Iran must surrender unconditionally to end the war. He said no. However, Iran has said it will avenge the killing of its supreme leader.
