The US Senate has rejected a resolution to prevent President Donald Trump from ordering further attacks in the Iran war.
The Senate voted 47 to 53 to end the war.
The resolution, introduced by Democratic senators, was supported by Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky. However, other Republicans did not support it. Pennsylvania Democrat John Fitterman said he stood by Trump.
Democratic lawmakers had introduced a resolution against Trump, saying he ordered the attack without congressional approval. The Democratic Party had prepared to block Trump from attacking boats against drug trafficking in Venezuela, Iran and Latin America. However, it failed.
Most Republican senators supported Trump's decision to attack Iran. Republican Senator Todd Young said, "We are at war now. We cannot forget this reality." But we need to listen, to take everyone's questions into account to create unity on the operation.'
He said that ordering the withdrawal of US troops from a war that began just a few days ago would send the wrong message.
The resolution is being voted on in the US House of Representatives on Thursday. The Democratic Party has been objecting to Trump starting the war without congressional approval.
