Iranian clerics have held a virtual meeting to select the Supreme Leader.

The clerics were unable to attend the event after Israel bombed the 88-member Assembly of Experts in Qom on Monday. Qom is a major center of Shia Islam. Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and former presidents studied here. The Islamic Revolution of 1979 also began here. Iran did not elect a successor to Khamenei while he was alive. That is why the clerics are now choosing the supreme leader amid a state of emergency. Khamenei and a large number of top leaders, including the commander of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, were killed in a US-Israeli attack on Saturday. Khanenei's son Mojtaba Khamenei is one of the main contenders for the position, but his whereabouts are unknown. Iran is currently governed by a Joint Transitional State Steering Committee led by President Masoud Pezheshkian, Chief Justice Gholam Hossein Mosseni, and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi of the Guardian Council.
