The United Arab Emirates is to cover the food and accommodation costs of tens of thousands of travelers stranded in the country during the conflict in the Middle East.

According to the UAE's state-run media outlet The National, the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) has sent a notice to hotels urging them to keep travelers and tourists stranded in the country safe.

'The cost of the extended stay will be borne by the DCT Abu Dhabi,' the notice said. Other reports have also said the state will cover the tourists' expenses.

Iran's supreme leader was killed in a US-Israeli attack on Saturday. In response, Iran has launched a large number of missile and drone attacks targeting the UAE capital Abu Dhabi and the financial and tourist hub Dubai.

More than 20,000 passengers have been affected since the closure of airports in the UAE on Saturday. Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport were both damaged in the Iranian attack.
