Police believe the shooter who opened fire outside a bar on Sixth Street, the entertainment district of Austin, the capital of the US state of Texas, may have been motivated by revenge for the attack on Iran.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the matter.

Two people were killed and at least 14 others were injured in the shooting on Sunday morning. The shooter has been identified as 53-year-old Indigo Diegna. He died at the scene during a police operation.

Diegna was wearing a sweatshirt with the Iranian flag and the words "Property of Allah" written on it at the time of the attack, authorities said.

It was reported that items such as the Quran and pictures of Iranian leaders and flags were found in his car. Police said they are investigating him for "possible links to terrorism."

During the investigation, it was also found that he had been struggling with mental health problems for some time. According to authorities, he fired from the window of his SUV while driving a car at customers sitting inside a beer garden in Buford's. After a while, he got out of the car and started shooting in the street.

The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at a bar that was open until midnight.   Digna was born in Senegal.

He entered the United States on a tourist visa in 2000, obtained a green card in 2006, and citizenship in 2013, according to US officials. He lived in New York before moving to Texas.

FBI Acting Special Agent Alex Doran said at a joint press conference  that the incident was being viewed as a “potential nexus to terrorism” due to the material found in Digna and his car. He said it was too early to comment on the matter because the investigation was ongoing.

The shooting occurred the day after the US and Iran attacked Israel. Senior leaders, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, were killed in the US attack.
