Russia outraged by Khamenei's assassination

Russia has expressed deep sorrow over the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Moscow was outraged by the incident.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said such killings have no place in a civilized world. Tehran confirmed the death of 86-year-old Khamenei in the attack on Sunday morning. His daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter were also killed in the attack. "Russia firmly and consistently condemns the practice of political assassinations and the 'hunting' of leaders of sovereign states. Such killings contradict the basic principles of civilized society and relations between states. They are a clear violation of international law," Russia said in a statement. Russia said the ongoing hostilities were causing casualties and serious damage to civilian infrastructure. The conflict would cut off shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the statement said. 'We call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions, an end to hostilities and a return to the political and diplomatic process to resolve the existing problems on the basis of the UN Charter and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,' the ministry added.

Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga's office said it would avenge Khamenei's assassination. 'We promise to take full revenge against the perpetrators and commanders of this great crime,' he said.
