An Israeli airstrike has hit a school, killing at least 85 people, Iranian media reported, citing an Iranian official.

Earlier, Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that 53 people were killed and 63 injured in the attack, citing a spokesman for the Ministry of Education.

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi posted a picture of smoke billowing from a primary school for girls in southern Iran on social media.

Araghchi said, "This school was bombed in broad daylight while young children were present. Dozens of innocent children have been killed in this place alone. These crimes against the Iranian people will be answered."

According to IRNA, Israel attacked a primary school for girls in Minab county in Iran's southern province of Hormozgan on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Education said, "Work is ongoing to remove the rubble of the building to search for other possible victims."
