Former New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been acquitted by a Delhi court in a corruption case. The government had jailed the 57-year-old Kejriwal in March 2024. He was accused of taking commission in the distribution of liquor licenses and various charges including money laundering.
The court acquitted him of all charges on Friday. 'Truth has prevailed,' Kejriwal told reporters after the court, 'Modi and Amit Shah conspired to destroy the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).'
The Delhi court acquitted him, along with former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and 21 others. Kejriwal had denied the charges against him.
Kejriwal, who worked as a tax collector, quit his government job to campaign against corruption. Kejriwal, who started active politics by forming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2012, managed to make the party second in the Delhi Assembly in the elections held at the end of 2013. After that, he became the Chief Minister in the AAP-led coalition government.
However, he dissolved the Assembly after the ruling partners objected to the anti-corruption Jal Lokpal Bill that the government was trying to push forward.
In the elections held later, AAP won 67 out of a total of 70 seats. In this election, the BJP won 3 seats, while no other party could win any seat. He then served as the Chief Minister for a second and third term. On 21 March 2024, while he was the Chief Minister, he was arrested on charges of taking commission to formulate the liquor policy.
He was defeated in the 2025 election. While the BJP, which came in first, brought 48 seats, the second-placed AAP brought only 22 seats. The BJP had campaigned for the cases filed against Kejriwal and influential leaders of the AAP party in this election to tarnish their image. After this election, BJP's Rekha Gupta is the Chief Minister of Delhi.
During Kejriwal's tenure, there was a major improvement in education, health and public administration in Delhi.
