US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of developing missiles that could reach the US. Earlier, the US attacked Iran's nuclear infrastructure last June.
At the time, Trump claimed that almost all of Iran's nuclear infrastructure was destroyed. He claimed that it would take years for Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. However, in his nearly 1 hour and 50 minute address to the US Congress (House) on Tuesday night, he refuted his own claim.
‘They have already developed missiles that can threaten our bases in Europe and abroad. They are working to build missiles that can reach the United States very soon,’ Trump said, ‘They were warned not to try to rebuild their weapons program, especially nuclear weapons, in the future. But they want to start again and are now pursuing their terrible ambitions,’ Trump said.
Trump addressed the Joint House for the first time since the start of his second term.
‘My priority is to solve this problem through diplomacy. But one thing is for sure, I will never allow the number one sponsor of terrorism in the world to have a nuclear weapon,’ Trump said of Iran. This is the first time a US president has addressed the House for such a long time.
Earlier, last Friday, Trump sent Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner to Geneva for indirect talks with Iranian officials. The two sides are set to meet again next Thursday. In these indirect talks, Omani officials have been meeting separately with representatives of both the US and Iran. The goal of the talks is to sign a nuclear deal. Trump has also warned of a major attack if Tehran does not agree to end its nuclear program. As the talks continue, Trump has deployed his navy, warships, fighter jets and bombers to the Middle East. The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is in the Arabian Sea. The Gerald Ford Carrier Strike Group is heading to the Middle East from the Mediterranean. The Gerald Ford carrier was deployed to the Caribbean Sea to put pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro before he was taken into custody in January. It is the largest warship in the world.
Trump said that talks with Iran would continue in the coming days. “We are talking to them. They want to make a deal. But they are not talking about giving up nuclear weapons completely,” Trump said, adding, “No nation should ever doubt America’s resolve. We have the most powerful military in the world.”
He also claimed that 32,000 people were killed during the Iranian revolution that began on December 28. The exact number of deaths was not released due to the ban on the internet in Iran. At a press conference in late January, the Iranian government said that about 3,117 people had been killed in the protests. However, human rights organizations and independent agencies have said that the number of deaths is higher.
Similarly, Trump has claimed to have ended eight different wars in the world in his first 10 months in office. He claimed that the Israel-Hamas, Pakistan-India, Rwanda-Democratic Republic of Congo, Thailand-Cambodia, Armenia-Azerbaijan, Egypt-Ethiopia and Serbia-Kosovo wars ended under US mediation. The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was brokered by Trump.
Now, under his leadership, a peace board has been formed with the goal of building a modern city in Gaza. However, the British media BBC has analyzed that his claim regarding other wars is not correct.
‘Most of these wars lasted only a few days. They were the result of long-term tensions. There was no fighting between Egypt and Ethiopia. The only tension between them was over the construction of a dam,’ the BBC wrote. ‘Even after the peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo was signed in Washington, the two countries were still at war. On the other hand, India has been denying Trump's claim that he played a role in ending the war with Pakistan. ’
Trump defended his strategy of increasing tariffs by saying that levying high tariffs on foreign companies and countries will reduce the income tax burden on Americans.
‘I believe that tariffs paid by foreign countries will significantly replace the modern income tax system, as they have in the past. It will take a huge financial burden off the people I love,’ he said.
In this context, Trump said that America was unsafe in the past due to illegal immigration, but now crime has been brought under control during his tenure. He said that his duty is to protect American citizens. America has made great progress in the 250 years since independence and he expressed hope that America will become stronger and stronger during his tenure.
Iran's response to Trump's claim is baseless
Iran has said that US President Donald Trump lied about its missile program. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaie said on Wednesday that Trump's claim is not true.
“What they are alleging about Iran’s nuclear program, Iran’s ballistic missiles, and the number of casualties during the January unrest is just a continuation of the ‘big lie,’” he wrote on social media X.
