The Slovak government has cut off emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine, further straining the country's ability to export electricity after the war damaged its energy infrastructure.
Slovakia has cut off electricity supplies after Ukraine failed to meet an ultimatum to send oil through the Druzhba oil pipeline by Monday.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has also warned that the European Union will reconsider its support for Ukraine. Fico said in a video message, "From today, Ukraine will not receive any help from Slovakia to stabilize its energy network."
He had urged the continuation of oil operations through the Druzhba pipeline within two days last Saturday. The Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline used to carry Russian oil to Slovakia via Ukraine.
But oil supplies through this pipeline have been stopped for several months. Ukraine has been accusing the pipeline of being damaged by Russian drone attacks. Russia, in turn, has blamed Ukraine for the attack.
Fico also accused Ukraine of refusing to allow the Slovak ambassador in Kiev to inspect the pipeline. He alleged that the pipeline was damaged not due to technical damage but due to political interests.
'We cannot always act only in Ukraine's interests. If Ukraine cannot get the pipeline operational within two days, we will cut off electricity supplies,' Fico said on Saturday. Ukraine has opposed the decision to cut electricity, saying Slovakia is acting in Russia's interests. Earlier, Hungary decided last week to cut off diesel supplies to Ukraine. Similarly, it had also threatened to close a $900 billion loan package.
