North Korea's ruling Workers' Party unanimously re-elected leader Kim Jong-un as general secretary on the fourth day of the party congress on Sunday.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Monday that under Kim, “the country’s war resistance as a nuclear power has been radically improved .”
“The congress also elected members of the party’s central committee and adopted amendments to party rules,” the KCNA news agency said. But it did not provide details about the changes.
At the Workers’ Party meeting, which is held only once every five years, the supreme leader outlines efforts ranging from housing construction to war planning. The Workers’ Party meeting has been held only nine times during the three-generation rule of the Kim family.
Kim Jong-il did not convene a meeting when he was supreme leader. However, since Kim Jong-un became supreme leader, he has called three consecutive meetings in 2016, 2021 and 2026.
In his inaugural speech on Thursday, Kim pledged to improve living standards. He said his nation was facing various challenges due to Western sanctions. Nearly 5,000 party representatives participated in the gathering.
